The story of the missing Malaysian aircraft is truly stranger than fiction

Monday 31 March 2014

The Langoliers is the tale of a jet plane crossing the US from Los Angeles to Boston overnight. Travelling with her sighted aunt, a little blind girl is excited, she's about to undergo an operation on the east coast which may restore her sight.

She falls asleep but when she wakes, her aunt is no longer sitting beside her. All she can find as she taps the seat with her hands is the woman's handbag.

The story is that the plane has somehow slipped through one of those rips in the time/space continuum, so beloved of Dr Who and everyone on board who was not asleep at the time has simply disappeared.

What's more, so have all the cities over which the plane is flying. A dozen or so passengers who were asleep, survive, including, luckily, a trained pilot who takes over in the newly-empty cockpit.

I won't spoil the story for you by telling any more, but the plane has disappeared from civilisation, there is no radio contact and no radar.
